Juvederm is a hyaluronic acid that is used to correct facial volume loss and increase softness where deep creases and wrinkles exist. Juverderm is manufactured from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occuring substance produced by the body. Manhattan plastic surgeon, Dr. Sherrell J. Aston, and his physician assistant, Alix O'Brien, PA-C, use Juverderm most frequently to correct deep nasolabial folds, marionette lines, and other deep creases in the skin. Juverderm is also used to add fullness to lips and volume to cheeks. Juverderm is a safe and effective filler that produces results which can last up to a full year.  

Juvederm is a gel substance that is injected with a fine needle directly into the skin. There is no anesthesia needed, although a numbing cream may be applied prior to injection to help with any discomfort. The injection sites will be sterilized and marked with ink. Once the filler is injected, results are immediately noticeable. The practitioner may massage the treated area so the filler spreads evenly. Other than temporary redness, the treatment has no after effect that will prevent a patient from going back to their normal routine. Patients should avoid strenuous exercise for approximately 24 hours. After a Juvederm injection, the face will look refreshed, softer, and smoother.

There is minimal pain associated with Juverderm injections depending on a patients pain tolerance; a numbing cream can be applied to help with any discomfort. With any injection, swelling and bruising is possible. Ice is recommended immediately following injections to minimize this risk.

Hyaluronic acid fillers have an outstanding track record for successfully reducing signs of aging with less risk than surgical cosmetic treatments. Severe cosmetic issues such as loose and sagging skin may be better resolved by a surgical facelift. The approach taken will be based on the patient’s cosmetic condition and aesthetic goals.

It is important to set realistic expectations when undergoing any cosmetic enhancement procedure. While the treatment will give a more youthful appearance, it can only do so much for patients who have severe wrinkles and volume loss.
