Overview
Many patients will come to our Manhattan plastic surgery center seeking improvement to the cheek area and the mid-face region. Over time, as a natural result of aging, the cheeks can lose volume and create a sagging appearance that droops into the lower portion of the face. Approved by the FDA, Voluma is a hyaluronic acid injectable facial filler that works great to give the cheeks a nonsurgical "lift" by temporarily adding volume to the mid-face. Dr. Aston and his physician assistant Alix use Voluma to restore the fullness of the cheeks, while at the same time addressing the nasolabial folds from above. Voluma is manufactured by Allergan, the makers of BOTOX® and Juverderm. While the results can last up to a 2 years, for some patients a more permanent solution may be considered. Dr. Aston will discuss all of the alternatives, including using silicone cheek implants, fat grafting, or a facelift, to create the desired look, as well as meet the goal of the patient.

What to Expect
Voluma is injected into the deep facial tissues with fine needles, so some patients may experience some minor pain from the needlestick. Numbing creams may be applied on the injection site to ease the patient’s discomfort. Patients also have the option to use lidocaine, which is mixed with the Voluma solution, to help provide anesthetic effects in and around the area. A treatment may last up to 30 minutes. Patients will be able to return to daily activities after several hours. There may be some swelling, redness and tenderness around the cheeks, which will subside after a few days. Results are readily evident and can last up to 2 years.
Voluma FAQs
Is Hyaluronic Acid Natural?
Voluma's main ingredient is a hyaluronic acid, a naturally occuring substance in the body. Its main function is cell hydration, and with its cross-linking abilities, it is generally useful in helping facial areas that lack volume. Over time, the gel substance breaks down and is absorbed naturally by the body without any side effects.
Ideal Candidate?
Those who seek improved volume in the cheeks may consider Voluma as a noninvasive solution. The lack of cheek volume may be due to aging or the patient’s natural facial structure. A consultation will determine if Voluma is the right option for you.
How long is recovery?
Patients may resume normal activities immediately following Voluma injections. No strenuous activities should be performed for 24 hours.
